Urology Research
Research has always
been an important focus of the Division of Urologic Surgery
at Washington University School of Medicine.
From the earliest days, there
has been an understanding that an effective doctor must be a good scientist
as well as a compassionate and understanding person. In keeping with that
principle, the division’s surgeons continually undertake projects that are
at the forefront of urologic research on topics such as prostate cancer
screening, treatment of benign prostate enlargement, cellular research,
outcomes research, female urinary incontinence and pediatric urology.
In the area of prostate cancer
screening, the division is participating in the Prostate, Lung, Colon and
Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial, which is funded by the National Institutes
of Health (NIH) and National Cancer Institute (NCI). Gerald L. Andriole,
Jr., M.D., the Robert K. Royce Distinguished Professor of Urologic Surgery
and chief of the Division of Urologic Surgery, is chairman of the Prostate
Subcommittee for the trial, which has made important recommendations in
screening for prostate cancer. In addition to the PLCO trial, Dr. Andriole
was involved in a clinical trial that found the drug dutasteride reduced
the risk of prostate cancer in men with an increased risk of the disease.
