Urology Research

Research has always been an important focus of the Division of Urologic Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine.

From the earliest days, there has been an understanding that an effective doctor must be a good scientist as well as a compassionate and understanding person. In keeping with that principle, the division’s surgeons continually undertake research projects that are at the forefront of urologic research on topics such as prostate cancer screening, treatment of benign prostate enlargement, the genetics of urologic malignancies, the male reproductive system, cellular research and pediatric urology.

In the area of prostate cancer screening, the division is participating in the Prostate, Lung, Colon and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial, which is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Cancer Institute (NCI). Dr. Gerald L. Andriole, Jr., chief of the Division of Urologic Surgery, is chairman of the Prostate Subcommittee for the trial, which is expected to be the definitive study addressing the benefits of screening for prostate, lung, colon and ovarian cancer. In addition to the PLCO trial, Dr. Andriole is involved in a clinical trial evaluating the drug dutasteride as a chemo-preventative agent for prostate cancer.

Other key areas of research by division urologists include:

  • How precancerous cells or cancer cells respond to conditions of low oxygen or reduced nutrients (with implications for prostate cancer)
  • The genetics of urologic malignancies
  • Varied aspects of urinary incontinence
