Urology Services

Washington University urologists offer a wide range of leading-edge treatment options – both surgical and nonsurgical – for medical conditions of the urogenital tract, including the prostate and testicles in males and the kidneys and bladder in both males and females.

Among the treatment options are minimally invasive procedures for many types of urologic tumors and other conditions. These procedures can lead to reduced pain, shorter hospital stays and at-home recovery, and fewer missed workdays for patients. And Washington University urologic surgeons at Barnes-Jewish Hospital are the only specialists in the region to offer a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive procedure for prostate cancer – laparoscopic radical prostatectomy.

Our physicians also are leaders in early detection of cancer using sophisticated screening methods for bladder and prostate cancer as well as advanced biopsy techniques for these two malignancies.

In the highly specialized area of reconstructive surgery, our surgeons perform such procedures as creation of a replacement bladder in patients with bladder cancer, reconstruction of the urethra, and repair and reconstruction of the genitals.

The Division of Urologic Surgery’s many advanced treatments have contributed to its consistent ranking by U.S. News & World Report among the top urologic centers in the United States.

Urologist Paul Austin, M.D., treats a pediatric patient.

Pediatric Urologic Surgery – Urologists based at St. Louis Children’s Hospital offer specialized services for children with urinary, genital and kidney conditions. Treatment is also available for many conditions and congenital abnormalities that are present at birth or discovered in young children.
